Jura JukolaProfile

“Only dead fish swim with the stream” has been my motto since I was 20 years old. Ten years earlier I became an individual after discovering the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: I started to follow my own path without paying attention to public opinion. From Federico Fellini’s movies I learned tolerance, which requires allowing freedom of speech. According to him, true internationality is possible only by acknowledging national roots. As a Finnish cosmopolite I have studied in Rome and made over one hundred trips abroad. I return to Italy again and again: I explored Rome in my childhood and discovered the Italian Renaissance, which inspired me to become an art historian. My character is an opposite to the Italian one: punctual, conscientious and curricular. I lack relaxedness and unpredictability, but in Italy it is always a pleasure to experience Fellinesque surprises. Stories grow from experiences: as a journalist I have written hundreds of articles about collecting and national defence.

Culture

I learned Classical music from Amadeus, which I saw for the first time in October 1984. During a year I watched the movie for eight times and wanted to become a composer even though I didn’t have musical talent. Before the end of the decade I saw the Magic Flute in Covent Garden, London and Aida in the Baths of Caracalla, Rome (both works were performed also in Savonlinna Opera Festival). Nowadays I enjoy music mainly in the Finnish National Opera. Here is a list of the latest experiences.

  1. Giacomo Puccini: Tosca (22.1.2009)
  2. Fredrik Pacius: Kaarle-kuninkaan metsästys (9.3.2009)
